
Upcoming highlights for countertenor Matthew Shaw include his November 2010 appearances as Ottone in Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden (NP) with performances through April 2011. In December the artist sings concerts of Händel’s Messiah with Musica Sacra and the Oratorio Society of New York at Carnegie Hall. Matthew will also appear as Ottone in Monteverdi’s Incoronazione di Poppea at the Semperoper Dresden in a new production in spring 2011 and in the revival in fall 2011. In June 2011 he appears as Tolomeo in Händel's Giulio Cesare with the Deutsche Oper am Rhein.
On January 3, 2010 Matthew made his debut in the title role of Handel's Giulio Cesare at Theater Dortmund and sang 15 performances. The artist was also invited to sing a performance of the same role in Kiel in June 2010. Another highlight of the 2009/10 season was his performance as Endimione for a new production of La Calisto at the Grand Theatre de Geneve conducted by Andreas Stoehr (dir. Philipp Himmelmann) in April. In July Matthew performs the role of the Isr. Messenger/Priest in Händel's Judas Maccabaeus with the Berkshire Choral Festival. In September 2010 the artist was heard in a highly-acclaimed Robert Carsen production of Handel’s Semele as Athamas at Theater an der Wien under the baton of William Christie alongside Cecilia Bartoli.
Since transitioning from baritone to countertenor, Matthew Shaw’s first big success was his appearance in spring 2009 as Endimione in Cavalli's La Calisto at the Landestheater Linz, where his portrayal received much praise from the press.
Additional highlights of his past performances as a baritone include the role of Jupiter in the North American premiere of Lully’s Psyché at the Boston Early Music Festival (recently released on the CPO label) and Eumete in Monteverdi’s The Return of Ulysses at Opera Vivente. Other engagements include his Carnegie Hall debut singing Bach Cantatas under the baton of Ton Koopman, Fauré’s Requiem with the New Jersey Symphony, and Masetto in Don Giovanni with the National Philharmonic. He also he made his debut with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra singing the role of José Tripaldi in Osvaldo Golijov’s Ainadamar at the Ojai and Ravinia Festivals under the baton of Robert Spano. Other performances include a tour of Dido and Aeneas with the Aix-en-Provence Festival, recitals at New York’s Austrian Cultural Forum, his Ravinia Festival debut singing the world premiere of Lita Grier’s Songs from Spoon River, and soloist in Handel’s Solomon with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. Mr. Shaw was a finalist in the Chimay International Baroque Singing Competition, and he was a Young Artist with Pittsburgh Opera, where he sang such roles as Guglielmo in Così Fan Tutte, Falke in Die Fledermaus, Malatesta in Don Pasquale, and Nerone in L'Incoronazione di Poppea. He received his Bachelor of Music from Penn State University and his Master’s Degree from Manhattan School of Music.
