Lyric tenor Javier Cortes will appear in the role of Gennaro in Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia in a new production at Oper Halle in Germany in spring 2010.

The Mexican tenor made his European debut in 2001 as Tonio in La Fille du Regiment in Casalmaggiore, Italy. In 2002-03 he joined the Washington National Opera as Edgardo in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor and the New York City Opera as the Duke in Rigoletto. In the following season Mr. Cortes made his debut with the Los Angeles Opera in several roles including Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Ruiz in Il Trovatore and Pavko in the world premiere of Nicholas and Alexandra, alongside Placido Domingo. In 2005 he went on to his Palm Beach Opera debut as Arturo in I Puritani. In his native Mexico, Javier Cortes has appeared as the Italian Singer in Der Rosenkavalier, Nemorino in L’Elisir d’amore and Tonio in La Fille du Regiment as well as in several Gala Concerts interpreting selections from operas such as Les pecheurs des perles, La Favorita and La Bohème. He is equally at home with roles spanning from the bel canto repertoire such as Bellini’s I Puritani, to verismo in Puccini’s La Bohème. In recent years Mr. Cortes made a successful debut with the New Embil Zarzuela in Guadalajara, Mexico, and presented a private concert for the Top Executives of the Federal Express company at the Carnival Center in Miami, Florida. Before making the transition into opera Mr. Cortes sang in numerous shows and musicals in Mexico City including the lead in five hundred performances of the acclaimed The Phantom of the Opera in the Spanish language. Among his many vocal awards, Mr. Cortes is a scholarship winner of SIVAM (International Society of Values in the Arts) and was a winner of the 2002 Licia Albanese - Puccini Competition in New York City.
