
Athens-born Greek mezzo soprano Chrysanthi Spitadi, 27, appeared this summer in the title role of Bizet’s Carmen with Oper Klosterneuberg in Vienna. She will also appear as a guest with the Hessisches Theater Wiesbaden in the 2010/11 season as Federica in a new production of Verdi's Luisa Miller.
Ms. Spitadi made her professional debut in August 2009 as Carmen in Chur, Switzerland, on the occasion of winning the International Audition Competition of Schlossoper Haldenstein. Since the beginning of her studies in Vienna at the Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst, Ms. Spitadi has had the opportunity to gain stage experience with mezzo roles in conservatory productions and has sung Isabella (Rossini’s L'italiana in Algeri), Carmen (Carmen), Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus), Tisbe (Cenerentola), Knusperhexe (Hänsel und Gretel). The young singer has also been heard on the concert platform and in song recitals in Vienna, Poland, Switzerland, France, and Greece. In December 2009 Ms. Spitadi was heard at the Vienna’s beautiful Schlosstheater Schönbrunn as the Knusperhexe in Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel. Chrysanthi Spitadi began her studies in 2004 in Vienna at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst with Prof. Leopold Spitzer and since 2006 studies with Prof. Julia Bauer-Huppmann. She graduated in January 2009. While completing her studies in solo singing, she also studied musical theater as well as theater and dance (classical ballet, jazz, modern, stepdance).
